Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.
To Mrs. J. H. Philpot.

With me all goes very well. The sunshine is beautiful and my people
are so good to me, and all the people whom I used to know and love
long ago seem to have improved and become more delightful, or perhaps
I understand, everyone better. I love more and more that thing of
Browning's:

Grow old along with me,
The best is yet to be,
The last for which the whole was made, etc.

Do you know it? It seems to me it will be so beautiful to be quite old
and have life with all its experiences lying behind you, to look down
on it all from the top of a mountain. ... I am working and am so glad
in my work. Every time I look out at the sunshine the force comes
running in to me.
