Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given. The year of the letter is implied by its place in the sequence of Cronwright-Schreiner letters.
To Dr. King Roberts.

I went to Notre Dame to-day. Isn't it glorious? It seems to me
something I have been looking for and longing for all my life when I
see that. I love it better than any building I have ever seen. ...
There's an idea built into Notre Dame in stone that we of this age and
the ages coming will have to build up again into our social forms. It
won't be stone next time. It will be men and women!! I go to it every
day nearly when I'm in Paris, and it seems to me as if I'd seen it
this afternoon for the first time. ... I shouldn't go to dinners in
England because I feel always out of place in Civilised Society, but
anything that makes up a comradeship among women is of value. I am
writing a paper to prove the inferiority of women to men based mainly
on observations taken on myself!!!
