When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.

4Who do you think was here to-day, Mr. Stoffel Fouche! He came to get
5me he said, and he would not go away unless I came with him, but of
6course I told him I couldn't do anything of the kind. ... He offers me
7£55 per annum and I will only have to teach Peter and Christina for
8three hours in the morning, and he will get a piano at once and build
9on two nice rooms for school-room and bedroom for me. If he does all
10he says, it will be very nice. Of course there will be troubles and
11draw-backs, but heaven is not on this side of the river of death, and
12I fear not on the other. One reason why I would rather go there than
13to the Bonteboks is that I would be nearer you, and perhaps some day I
14might see you. ... I have such a splendid little book of anatomy. I
15never read any work more clear and just what I wanted. I am going to
16try and get some dead baboons to experiment upon.
