Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract.
…It was so beautiful to have you here. It all seems quite homelike
now. I listen to the trains going past in the night & thought of you
in yours, & wished I had asked you to write when you got down, as
there are so many mishaps nowYou are better in a way as far as the
acute rheumatism goes, but in a way you look nearly as ill as when you
came up to Hanover that time with Martial Law. Do you remember? You
need fresh air, exercise & plenty of hot or cold baths to stimulate
the circulation, & no mental worries!! It has left quite an ache in my
heart, my darling one, to see you looking so tired… I took Neta out
for a tiny walk this morning...

It is so sweet to have seen you here. You don’t know how different
it made everything here seem; & strangely, that restless tired feeling
I’ve had seems much less. I feel almost as if I could write stories
to-day. One’s state of feeling has everything to do with one’s
power of artistic production…
