Legend
TThe Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract, that Betz was his sister Beatrice, and that Olive Schreiner’s letter was concerned with the Hanover house and the importance of getting the painting done so it could dry and not set off her asthma.
…I hope you are feeling stronger & eating heaps. Eat, eat, eat, &
don’t worry about anything, my darling… I am sending you a buck
that Mrs Le Roux has given me. It was caught in the trap they set for
jackals last night. Please give half to Will & keep half for yourself
& Baby. I hope you will like it. Ask Betz to give you a little jelly
to eat with it as buck is nothing without stuffing or jelly. Please
buy yourself a bottle of extract of malt & take a tablespoonful before
each meal mixed with a little milk...
