Legend	The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract.

1 …I am so glad ‘Arriet is at the office” Yesterday I went to the
2Highlands. There was a big gathering in my honour. Will, Fan & all
3their children, Charley and Emma Earp & their 5 children, Will Stuart
4& of course Effe & Arthur Brown, & we had a big supper, with mother
5sitting in her arm chair in the corner at her own little table. We sat
6down 21 to table with old John Pursglove… Everyone is so unspeakably
7good to me. Private. Will says the Imperial Martial Law Inquiry men
8who came out, Lord Ulverston &c were astonished at the shameful way in
9which Martial Law has been carried out… It is a fine day & I am very
10well for Cape Town & wonderfully better than in Hanover in sprints. I
11only want you to be here to be quite happy.
