Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date onto this extract, and that ‘She went later to Wagner’s “Meistersingers”: If that is music, she says, she doesn’t like it. Wagner is earthy.’. There are some differences between this transcription and the version that appears in The Letters….
1 …The Beethoven Concert was heaven! We had the 7th Sympathy in A,
2perhaps the divinist thing the human spirit have ever produced except
3the 9th. You feel yourself expanding & expanding with infinite joy. I
4always seem to have those words of Pope’s singing themselves in my
5mind: “I mount! I fly! - Oh grave where is thy victory, Oh death
6where is thy sting!” You feel as if neither life nor death nor
7anything else matters - there is only infinite joy…
