Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract.
…My experiences here have been painful. I am feeling so heart sore
that if it were not for (some business affair), I would go straight
home from here tomorrow. If it were not for dear old Robert I don’t
know what I should have done. The Jew I got down to the place said,
when he got there, he couldn’t pack unless I got the packing case &
he charged me 15/- all the same, though he did nothing. But all that
is a small matter. It’s the meanness & cowardice of human nature
that is so terrible. I saw Morthland for a minute this morning ……
Dear one, I long to see you… Love to Miss .. How few such brave true
souls there are in the world; but one or two save humanity…
