The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract. He also comments that ‘Olive arrived at De Aar on the afternoon 8.10.07 & we lived for six months in the little room to test it (see her Life). When she couldn’t come to lunch at the Hotel, I used to have mine & then take hers up in a "three Decker". Sometimes we dined at the Hotel in the evening. The other simple meals we had in the room. After 6 months trial, I built a large & beautifully ventilated house, with safeguards against heat & cold; & there she lived, with frequent changes, till November 1913, when she left for England.’.
