Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract. The reference was to his clerk or rather partner Meyer and business difficulties that had arisen.
…I watched your cart go round the bottom of the Spitz Kop; just
after, the rain began. It is now a quarter past four, thunder &
lightening & so dark I have had to light the lamp... It is most
curiously oppressive; one can’t breathe. Have put the mierkats to
bed & Ollie is rolled up in her rug before the fire. I got your card
this morning. It poured & thundered & lightened here all night. The
vley is fuller than it’s been for 6 years. Goodbye. Somehow your
face distressed me so when you were here. It seemed as if some great
mental, not physical, weight were on you. Expect it’s this matter
about Meyer…
