Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract, and that the ‘very silly’ reference was because Olive Schreiner was nervous about sleeping alone in the house.

2 the guard came & helped me out nicely with many things at Hanover
3Road… I didn’t know till I got back how much stronger & better I
4was for my lovely change. The mierk mierkats are well & Ollie
5flourishing… I am very silly. I keep looking for you here. The house
6is so empty! I’m afraid if I didn’t know you were coming on Sunday,
7 I’d have a long howl. You see, you’ve been so sweet to me…
