Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written where it was sent from onto this extract, with its date and the place it was sent to implied by sequence, and also that their dog Ollie and the mierkats had stayed with him.
1 …Got here at 5.12. Very cold but got into bed. Slept splendidly till
28. Had a good breakfast. Am now going to send you a wire. Lovely
3weather, bright, fresh, cool, heavenly. It all looks so beautiful one
4feels the tears come into one’s eyes with joy, that strange joy you
5feel at beauty. Only my darling boy is in the dust & sadness of De Aar.
6 I want nothing to make me perfectly happy here but you…
