Legend	The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date, where it was sent from and the place it was sent to onto this extract.

1 …I’ve had such a happy day, dear. This morning Ollie & I went for
2a walk on to the top of the big flat-topped “Owl Kopje”. It was
3fine up there… This evening I’ve been sorting out the papers I’m
4going to take with me… I went for another little walk this evening
5just beyond the Angel Kopje & saw the sunset… One must have a kind
6of happiness everywhere, if there’s sunrise & sunset, & one has
7strength to look at them. I suppose you will be back on Wednesday
8night. Your speech was just fine. I shall be glad to see your Beaufort
9speech… Ettie will take the mierkats… I told her we’d pay ^at the
10Highlands^ 10/- a month to the man who looked after them…
