The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date onto this extract, with where it was sent from implied by its place in the sequence of extracts, and also that Mr Lloyd has written to him that ‘Olive is improving…..I am certain she’s better than when she arrived…To see her and converse with her are life giving…Dr John Brown told me on Saturday most emphatically that she ought to stay here for a few months at least…Olive and I go on the spree occasionally. We did so last night…going for our potations to Quinn’s tea room and not reaching Olive’s home till 9.15 p.m. !!! It does her good. Tonight Mr Roos takes her to Mr Reitz’s lecture on the Taal and tomorrow night I am taking her to Miss Fraser’s concert.’.
