Legend	The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date, where it was sent from and the place it was sent to onto this extract.

1 …I got your wire this morning. I am glad to know you are there all
2right. It has been very hot since you left. I took the Purcells to see
3the Burgers Saturday evening, on Sunday we went for a very delightful
4picnic to the foot of the Spitz Kop. We left just after breakfast &
5did not return till unreadable the dark. There was only one
6thing wanting to my perfect happiness - can you guess what? This
7morning Burger drove us out to the farm. We got back at one. The
8Purcells are coming up this afternoon again soon, & I have asked them
9to stay to supper. I am roasting a leg of mutton so that I can make
10them sandwiches to take in the train tomorrow. It is such a joy to do
11anything for them…
