Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract.
…I am going to get up early tomorrow & go out before nine & shop the
whole day only coming up once or twice to see how Neta is. She’s so
lonely shut up here in this room I can’t leave her. She never left
me when I was ill at Mrs Viljoen’s & all alone; that is always in my
mind… Dr. & Mrs Brown arrive by steamer tomorrow… How is my poor
Baas getting on. I’ll never never go away without you again, you
must come with me. I am always tired at my heart when you are so far
away. It was so terribly hot yesterday, all the train drivers going
about with cabbage leaves under their hats for the sun…
