Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given.. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract, and that ‘When I got to Hanover I got the Col. Sec to send an expert mental Health officer up, who found the source of typhoid contamination, & the epidemic was thus stopped.’.
1 …Were you depressed or worried about anything on Wednesday night? I
2was so miserable & anxious about you all night, such a tender feeling
3I had to you as if I wanted to put both my arms round you & take care
4of you. Perhaps you were troubled about that leaflet. I read your
5little letter in the Beaufort Courier, Dear one. It was touching to me;
6 so simple & straight like yourself…
