6 I got this letter from Bettie this morning & could not make it out
7till I found that it must have been put into my envelope by mistake &
8be meant for you; there is no end to it. I long, oh how I long, to see
9your sweet face. I am living here alone in my little room in the veld.
10Cron goes to his business at 8.30. He has his lunch down town, at ^half past^
11four he comes home very tired & I make him a cup of tea, & he goes out
12to pay golf for an hour & a half, the only thing that keeps him alive
13in this awful climate. In the evening I sometimes walk with him to the
14camp to have dinner, & then we come back to the little room & go to
15bed. The heat here is very terrible 102 sometimes in the houses, in
16the evening & it is only November!!!

18 I see the Transvaal & Free State are determined that we federation
19comes we shall take the Franchise away from the Colonial natives who
20have it now. I think with terror of this Federation which will mean
21the most terrible native war & the most merciless South Africa has
22even known. Do you & Miss Molteno ever get & read the Cape Town
23^papers?^
