6 Thank you for your letter. At first such a terrible feeling came over
7me when I thought you would not be coming back for two years, but now
8I feel sure we will see you here sooner. Perhaps if anything brought
9you out you & I might go for a little two weeks holiday to Kat River &
10the Ju Kowie in June or July!!! That is the beautiful time for
11visiting those parts. ^We shall return here from parliament about the
1212th of June.^

14 Beloved friend, you won’t say one little word about my individual
15life to any of my friends in England. I have never said to any
16humanbeing what I said to you: & I sometimes feel so distressed that I
17did. Great is silence.

19 Good bye Beloved. May your time in England grow brighter & brighter
20with the spring & sunshine.

23^You know the world is so small. I find in some ways England is nearer
24to Cape Town & Hanover than Natal. And any little word you said might
25be so misunderstood & repeated. The women here don’t distress me any
26more. I am so much more able to bear things than I was. Have Tell me
27what you think of Carpenter’s new book. ^
