The date has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. The name of the addressee and the address the letter was sent to are provided by an attached envelope, from which the stamp and postmark have been removed. Schreiner was resident in Hanover from September 1900 to October 1907, after 1902 with visits, sometimes fairly lengthy, elsewhere.

3 I hope you will get this note Mrs Purcell tells me you are still in
4Cape Town. Did Mrs Murray sail on the 14th as you said she would in
5your last Post Card. Is it very hot in Cape Town. Here the heat is
6more prostrating than it has ever been known in Hanover, but then
7there has never before been such a drought. Nothing to eat, & even the
8water in the fountain running low! Hofmeyr writes that there will be a
9fresh election at Prince Albert on the 7th & I suppose soon after that
10he shall know & perhaps I shall come down to Cape Town then. Tell me
11if its very hot there. Sometimes the summer remains quite cool there
12till after Xmas. I long so much to see. The Smuts are going to spend
13six weeks at Gordon’s Bay. It's sad to be so cut off from you all.
