I got a nice letter from old John X today. Do you know whether this
movement of the Uitlanders Committee is real, or if Rhodes is at the
back of it; trying to get the Uitlanders in his hand?? Try to find out
for me. Farrely is a great scoundrel & was always said at Johannesburg
to be a Rhodes man. I should like to work with them if they are
sincere but against them if they are Rhodesmen laying a trap.

Neither Mr nor Mrs Sauer has written to me. I have heard nothing of
them since I left Cape Town. Mrs S has not yet handed on the MS to
Marchand.

Did Mrs Steytler write to you about the things for America I wrote to
her about. I’ve no asthma but my heart is giving me great pain.
