Dear Friend

I must write you a line this beautiful evening. This afternoon Cron &
I went to the top of a koppje across the plain. As we were sitting on
it we saw a cart turn out ^of the road^ & it was some Boer friends of
mine who came to fetch us for a little drive. Tomorrow all the country
people will be in town for Nachtmaal, & Mrs do Toit is going round
with me in the afternoon to see many of them.

I am working hard. I wish I knew you were quite strong again.

Cron & I generally sit up at our writing till about 11 o’clock, & then
I make us some cocoa by my lamp. I’m going to make it now. It’s so
sweet to have him here & he is very happy with plenty of writing to do.

Good bye. I hope you will get to Calledon. It’s no use killing oneself
about politicians. The best of them are opportunist, but the people
our great people are sound.

Good bye
