Dear Friend

I got your note here this morning on my arrival. I hope Miss Greene is
really better. Cron read her poem without knowing it was hers, &
thought it very good.

I got here this morning, I left Beaufort West yesterday about four, &
got to Hanover Rd about 2.30 in the night. Such splendid air, it was
heavenly. I went over to the hotel & lay down for some hours & then
the cart from Hanover came to fetch me. This is a pretty little place
smaller than Middelburg & perhaps not pretty, not such glorious
mountains round, but very nice: so nice after Beaufort. Of course the
air isn’t the same as at Hanover Rd where there is no town, but its
nice.

All the trees are coming out. I shall know after a couple of nights
how it suits me. Cron talks of coming up soon.

Yes, they are going to take Rhodes up & play the game with him, not
openly but they’ll take his tools & it will lead to nothing but
failure.

I am staying with such a nice kind woman the widow of the doctor who
died a couple of months ago. She was a Miss Tredgold of Beaufort West.
The people here seem to want to be very kind to me, quite different
from at Beaufort West. Such nice Jew people keep the hotel at Hanover
Rd Station. I always like Jews.

I hope I shall soon be at work again. Did I tell you I only got £20
from the literary agent for the publication for my long article in the
Ethical Review did divided into eight articles.

The agent is also the editor of the Review, & he sold it to himself.
Its rather puzzling to see how one’s to live at that rate. (this is
private
)
