Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner postcard, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The date is provided by the postmark on this postcard, while the name of the addressee and the address it was sent to are on its front. Schreiner was resident in Berea, Johannesburg, from December 1898 until late August 1899.
We went to hear old Kruger in the square yesterday: we got good places,
just in front of him. I wished so you & Miss Green had been there.
The old man was to me a touching & impressive spectacle with his long
thin white hair, & closed eyes (his eyes are very bad) & the animation
lighting up the old face when he spoke till it looked youthful. He
made a fine speech. The printed accounts give no idea

^of its simplicity & directness.
