The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in Matjesfontein from mid April 1890 to mid March 1891, with occasional short visits elsewhere.

My dear Mary,

3 I don't know why I want to write to you tonight. Do you know its so
4nice to call you Mary, I've never had a friend I called Mary before, &
5the name seems so to belong to you. I will come & stay with you when I
6come down on the 9th or 10th if you will have me: I don't know about
7the Kimberley trip till my nephew comes next Sunday. He is on his way
8to Fraserburg now, & I don't know when he will be back.

10 The Inneses left yesterday. I do love them, but my heart is very big.
11It always seems to me that the more one one does love the more one can;
12 one likes Mr Innes more & more the more one knows him. I am working
13hard, but am longing for it to be over that I can go for say two years
14travelling - anywhere.

16 I am so longing to see you. Why dont you send me a likeness of yours,
17please! I would like it so, & one of Mr Sauer. Then I would have you
