This letter can be dated by reference to Schreiner’s weekend visit to the Pethick-Lawrence’s country house in September 1918. Schreiner was resident at Porchester Place from early April 1917 until August 1920, when she left Britain for South Africa.
 Monday.

 Dear John

Thanks for letter & books. I’ve sent the parcel on to Ursie.

I’ve just this moment come back from three blissful days with my
friends in the country. They have a delightful stage manager staying
with them & his wife a delightful intellectual little actress who acts
under the name of Muriel Pratt. We spent all out time under the apple
trees in the garden & had all our meals out of doors. They live in a
lovely old farmhouse a mile away from any other house. We were all of
one mind & one spirit about nearly every thing - & its seldom you can
find five human beings together in such perfect harmony. They were
great suffragettes. When I asked my friend if if she knew Joan she
burst out in her praise. She said she was quite the most beautiful &
most charming woman they had ever had among the suffragettes so I was
quite delighted. I feel so low spirited I could sit & howl coming back
to my lonely little room out of that warm atmosphere of love &
 fellowship.

I’m going to rush out & get on the top of an omnibus.

 Give my love to Joan
 Your small aunt
 Olive
