5This is your birthday, the first for so many long years without a
6little gift from him.

8Dear I know how your old friends will all gather about you & try to
9make it a happy day for you. Thank you so much so very much for your
10letter. When I think how it would be if I ever went back to Africa -
11you are the person I want most to see.

13I will write a real letter next week, now the fog is so terrible it
14choaks one.

16Yesterday all day you couldn’t see across the street, & & for three
17hours in the middle of the day all the buses stopped running from the
18city: it was pitch dark.
