5My dear Lucy

7It seems so long since we had any news from the Cape. Our mail as you
8will have heard went down in a Japanese ship that was lost.

10Betty & Miss Greene have gone today to see Barkley & his wife & new
11child in the country Alice Greene is just wonderful, she looks so
12young & well & happy. Betty as I told you looks 15 years younger than
13when she first landed.

15Alice I have seen very little of since she came, but Betty & I are
16much together. We make expeditions on the tops of omnibuses &
17sometimes go to picture shows!! One has to try to do something or one
18would break down utterly under the nightmare horror of this war.

20We had an air raid ^here^ yesterday in which the papers say there were
21about 500 killed & wounded – but what a small matter that seems to
22the thousands that are falling all over Europe of all races.

24My sister in law got some beautiful roses from Mrs Gredham Greathead
25today. I’ve not seen or heard from her for a long time.
