The date of this letter has been derived from the postmark on an attached envelope, which also provides the address it was sent to. Schreiner was in Cape Town from early October to late December 1909.
1 Dear Lucy, I had just written to tell you I couldn’t come on
2Thursday when your note came. Perhaps on Monday I shall f be better &
3able to come. How lovely it would be if you were somewhere near me & I
4could come over & see you & the dear children any time.

11 I thought Merriman’s speech fine because they were out spoken. It
12doesn’t matter ^so much^ if your views differ or agree with that of a
13man, if he is only frank & out spoken, The nearer one comes to the end
