Dear Friend

I got here yesterday at four. It is beautiful to see green grass &
trees again Hanover is quite a desert now, with nothing but clouds of
sand wheeling over the grey earth. Cron did not come as he has his
cricket concert tonight. Tomorrow is Oom Paul’s funeral. This
morning I went down to the hall where the body lies in state. It is
the most splendid spectical I have ever seen it quite over powered me.
Thousands & thousands will be here tomorrow. I’ll w try to write an
account of the whole thing & send it you.

Yesterday in Johannesburg I fainted in the train. None of the porters
would carry my luggage & I had to carry it in myself I suppose the
weight was too much. I am very very well today. Have rested so
splendidly & got no asthma. I’ll write a long letter either here or
when

^I get home next week. I’ll leave this as soon as the trains are
empty enough. I hear Miss Hobhouse is coming out again. I saw de la

today. De Wet is expected but has not turned up. I wonder if there
is a little pull between the Freestate & Transvaal. But he may turn up
yet. ^
