3 The £6 has come. I have paid the woman’s rent till the end of next
4month 15/- a month, also bought her some groceries enough to last her
5for a month, & have given £1 to the subscription list they are
6getting up for her. The money (most of it only 2/6 & 2/- as the mass
7of the people here are very poor) is to be given to Mr Hofmeyr the
8Dutch minister here, who will give it out it to her at the rate 2/6 a
9week. The three men were shot last night a little after 6 o’clock.
10They died protesting their innocence, & that the man who turned
11Queen’s evidence lied, & that they had nothing to do with the attack
12on the train.

14 I went this morning to see the wife of one she lives in a tiny mud
15floored house of two rooms, & has 5 little children all boys, the
16youngest 18 months, the eldest 10 years, & she is expecting another.
17The other old man ?Nevenhout & his daughter seem quite heart broken;
18one son ^of his^ was shot yesterday, & the two other sons both unmarried,
19 one a lad in his teens have been sentenced to two ^five^ years
20^transportation^. I wonder if we could get the sentences revised,
21especially for the youngest one?

23 I am keeping the rest of the money, not giving it all to Mrs
24?Nienhagel yet as there are many other people to be tried & who may be
25in need, as great as her’s. So far I have spent only £3 odd.
