The date has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in Berea, Johannesburg, from December 1898 until late August 1899. The name of the addressee and the address this letter was sent to are provided by an attached envelope, from which the stamp and postmark have been removed.

I didn’t go to Paardekraal as I was not feeling fit enough.

3 Many thanks for South African News, some one is going to send it
4direct from Cape Town in future. The S.A. News does & must restrain
5itself! When the lives of thousands of human creatures are in the
6balance every word becomes of solemn importance. I shall be so glad
7when I know you are resting a bit.

9 I shall form my final opinion of Milner when I hear what he sent home
10after the conference. I have a feeling that he has changed his views:
11if he has not, then it is probably war, & war at once. I fear things
12will not be settled enough for you to find a holiday here do you good
13& fit you for the work you must do: but it would be splendid if you
14could come I think there will not be

16^war for another 3 weeks if it does come. That it will have to come
17some day unless Rhodes dies soon I feel little doubt, but every year
18we put it off is something gained. ^
