6 I have just had a dreadful blow lying on the sofa I took up a paper, &
7saw what I could hardly believe, your name as owning many 209 shares
8in the Cape of Good Hope Bank. I could not believe it at first. I made
9so sure that you had told me that all your shares were in the Standard
10Bank. I really do not know what to say. It is not as if Dr Brown were
11a young man just beginning life, but to have one may say the careful
12hard earnt savings of a life thrown away. It does seem to me one of
13the hardest things I have ever had to see. Of course other people have
14lost too, but I do not believe there is one who has used their money
15so nobly as you two.

18don’t know what to do for Alice. If I can I shall borrow money here
19for her. Oh my dear generous friends, I know you will make the best of
20it, but this is a terrible blow, & Willie’s medical education is
21only just beginning!
