The year has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Theis letter has been dated by reference to Caroline Murray 'passing' De Aar as commented on in a letter Schreiner to Caroline Murray of 23 July 1910 (BC16/Box4/Fold3/1910/15). Schreiner was in De Aar from May or June to November 1910.

My dear Mrs Murray,

I am writing to ask a very great favour of you. I would not do so even
knowing how willing you always are to help others, but it is really
such a great matter to me. I got a little Kaffir milk (the fermented
milk they have in their skin bottles & calabashes) from Mrs Charles
Molteno
& brought it up with me on the train. I started it in a large
stone jar here & it did me wonderful good, helped me as nothing has
helped me for years. When I went up to the Transvaal they let the germ
die in my bottle. You have to add Fresh unboiled milk every day or so
or it spoils.

I am missing it much. Could you perhaps bring me a little with you if
any is to be had where you are.

If you could buy me a Kaffir calabash with the milk started I would
pay anything for it. But you would have the trouble of adding fresh
milk at Bloemfontein & Na Norvals Pont. If you could do this for me I
would by be so grateful but don’t trouble about it if just starting
when this reaches you. I would be glad to pay two or three pounds to
have it.

Yours in haste to catch post
