PS I ought to have remembered the date of your birthday because it was
in October 1899 sooner after we got to Cape Town, when we couldn’t get
through to the Transvaal & you gave us such a dear warm welcome when
we turned up pennyless wanderers at Lyndall. Your kindness to me then
is one of the things I can never forget, & I seem never able to do
anything for you in return to show how much I felt it.
