Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The date has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

Dear Will

Jim Sauer’s body went past this morning at a quarter past two. Oh
Will, the tragedy of it that his last act should have been that native
land bill. Of course he meant to administer it so wisely & carefully
that it would do no harm; but one cannot for a moment countenance evil
& oppression in the hope of our power of there by doing future good.
It is for his sake that I feel so sorry. It spoils a lifes record. His
death affects me strangely. I realize so what he must have suffered
during the last days. But the suffering was short. Our men in any
sense liberal are dying out & there seem none to take their place,
unless it be possible to arouse the working men to see their duty to
all labour.

I hope the children trot you out to golf sometimes.
