3 Dear Laddie

5 Yes that kind of frame will be lovely. My "Victories" frame is only
6made of four bits of plank put together by an upcountry work man for
71/6 so I don’t want it copied, though I love it now as one loves the
8wrinkles in ones friends faces because one has known then so long.
9Adela Smith’s husband must be a fine character. She wrote me a few
10weeks ago the most beautiful letter about him I ever had from a wife
11about her husband. She said she felt she had only begun truly to
12develop during the last three years, & that what was great or good in
13her she owed entirely to her husbands influence. Of course that’s
14nonsense she was always a singularly noble nature, but its beautiful
15that one who has long been married should be able to say, "It
16impossible to live close to such a nature without being ennobled by it."

18 My little locket has come but is still at the post office. Thanks dear
19for bringing them and the dress that can wait till I come – If I
20don’t come you can send it up. But send the picture as soon as its
21done, I want to hang it before I go.
22
23 I’d like to meet Lady Winchester, & would offer to go to the station
24to see her as she passes but just now I’m not able to walk so far,
25continual cough & angina are doubling me up. If she cared to break her
26journey here for a night I would be very glad to see her. The hotels
27very good. Its always nice to see people from Europe
28
29 I think the photograph of you & the two delightful.

31 Love to the wifie. Thank her for having gone to see Hotel Milner for
32me. I’ll write to her soon.

35 ^I can’t come before the 24th because Cron is going to the congress
36at Bloemfontein & I shall stay to look after things, which will make
37his going easier. Ol.^
