The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

3 Your letter has come. You are wicked not to write – but when your
4letters do come they one of them is worth ten of mine.

6 Dear old Joe ?Sutton is here. It’s so nice to have him, but I was
7disappointed that Kitty wasn’t with him.

9 I send you some photos which will interest you, as they are the people
10Dot knows. Isn’t old Mrs Pearsall Smith lovely – "Perfect through
11suffering" I always think when I look at her face. She’s now nearly
1280. Hasn't she a grand face. The beauty of the life & the character
13written on it.

15 Mrs ?Borman is the mother of Dots two friends the Costellos. (She
16married a second time. The one on the left is my dear friend. She was
17the most beautiful human creature I had ever seen when I first met

19^her. Perhaps Mrs ?Offie de Villiers would like to see it as she
