4Dear Mr Hodgson

6I shall be coming up to London on Tuesday (to-day week) Would
7Thurs-day evening at 6.45. at Holborn Restaurant suit you? If either
8of us change our plans we can let the other know, but unless something
9very unexpected happens I shall be there. I suppose the busses still
10run? If they don’t I can’t go anywhere as I can’t do the underground
11at all.

13I enclose a cutting from the Globe you may have missed. Jan Smuts is a
14man of blood. It breaks my heart that he should have come to this.
15Botha while ignorant & un-educated is a far more human man. I don’t
16think Germany has ever dreamed of taking Northern countries Her
17ambitions have all been South-ward & Eastward.

19I am too ignorant as to how the Bulgarians are armed to form any
20opinions as to their strength. Of all the nations who have taken part
21in this war, ^Bulgaria^ has most of my sympathy. She was shamefully
22treated by the great powers. If you know of any good books on the
23Balkans, & it is not too much trouble would you put the names down for
24me. I want to get them when I come to London. Travels, history,
25anything.

27I do hope to God there will not be civil war in South Africa
